THE BIRDS

by Yvette Nolan

Directed by Reneltta Arluk

 A JMU Production

The School of Theatre and Dance

April 2024

Two humans  flee the modern city to the pure land of the birds seeking “freedom from the laws of man” and looking “for hope…the thing with feathers that perches in the soul.”   Nolan’s text uses the felicitous  world of the birds to yet allude, through avian imagery, to the history of settler colonialism while addressing the ongoing challenging questions of Indigenous communities. Nolan mends the pieces of stolen lands, by reminding us, performers, and audience members, of the oral culture, values, myth, and folktales of Indigenous peoples.
